Although any American city (and many, many non-American ones) can boast a ‘Chinatown’, Chicago’s Chinatown has always had for me a particular charm. Here you’ll find far less of the usual greasy, American Chinese food that bears little resemblance to anything coming out of Asia. Come here for a far more authentic experience, with food hot enough to get more than white people crying, and the kind of vegetables you don’t see in the average crappy Chinese restaurant (i.e. lotus root.)
Saint Alp Teahouse boasts the best bubble tea, with a long, intimidating menu which is topped in my opinion by Taro (which tastes kind of like puppy dreams). Try a red-bean paste bun (if you haven’t had it, trust me, it’s not as gross as it sounds) at Tasty Place Bakery and Café. Lao Ma La has what is undoubtedly the spiciest food for those of you that crave a tear-jerker while Lao Hunan has some of the best food overall (and is randomly communist themed). Wander through the shops to see huge jars of pickled animals and strange herbs you may not have ever heard of. And if you’re looking for food late at night then Chi Cafe is hopping at all hours with people coming in all the time for a nice 3 am snack. Ping Tom Park also has great views of the city, and a secret path to the downtown area if you’re feeling more adventurous.
