Further down the road from the Visitants’ Church is the Radziwill Palace or the Presidential Palace, currently the office of the Polish President. However, it was the seat of the Viceroy among others and was the venue of Chopin’s first public recital in 1818 when he was a mere eight years old. An elegant, white-facade building in the classic style, fronted by an equestrian statue of Prince Józef Poniatowski, the Marshall of the Empire, it usually has stiff looking guards patrolling the grounds. But visitors can relive some of the sombre atmosphere by pressing the button on the bench to play another of Chopin’s compositions.
