Located on Canal Road on the southwest side of town, Mao Coffee isn’t the easiest to get to for many travelers. You will need your own set of wheels, but it is certainly worth the trip if you’re looking for something new and to see a different side of the city. Translating essentially to “drunk coffee”, Mao Coffee is set in a large garden off of the highway and is known for serving its signature drinks similar to how you would drink in a Thai bar – you mix them yourself! Your drink comes out with a glass of ice, a shot of an espresso and your “mixer”, milk, in a small Thai whiskey bottle for you to blend yourself. The coffee shop also serves a couple hot sandwiches and selection of cakes and teas. While the coffee is good, the atmosphere – you can choose to sit inside or outside – and novelty of mixing your own drink are the real appeal when it comes to masses racing to this popular spot. If you want to beat the crowds, try coming during the week when it is a little quieter and you will miss the weekend rush.
