Recognized for its unique rock and cliff formations, Ob Luang National Park in the hot district of Chiang Mai, features a striking narrow, but long, canyon that was slowly formed over hundreds of years by the Mae Chaem River. This Grand Canyon of Thailand is beautiful year round but is most impressive during the country’s rainy season from about June to October when the river is at its wildest. Along with picturesque views, the national park is also home to the Thep Phanom Hot Springs, overnight camping and bungalows for rent. Bird watchers come to spot feathered friends along the banks of the river and adrenaline junkies can enjoy rafting down the river. It’s not all rest and relaxation however; the park’s distinctive cliffs and caves are the sites of ancient burial locations and paintings making the park recreational, educational and archaeologically significant. Since Ob Luang National Park is further away from Chiang Mai city (about 100 km) than the other parks on this list, make sure to start your trip early in the morning in order to have time to get back into town or plan to spend the night among the remarkable rock formations.
