When you stay at the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel, you can be the neighbour of British royalty for the night. Located on the famous Royal Mile, the Holyrood Palace is the official residence of the monarch and the setting for state occasions. Built in 1671-78, the palace officially became ‘royal’ in the 1920s. Past guests have included Nelson Mandela and Pope Benedict XV1. A naked bald female ghost called Agnes is said to haunt Holyrood but she will leave you alone in the nearby hotel.
Recently refurbished and situated opposite the Scottish Parliament building, the hotel offers an interesting take on afternoon tea. Fluffy scones? Savoury finger sandwiches? Tiered cake stands? Yes—and a teapot full of Hendrick’s Gin if you like. The four-star Old Town hotel looks out on the Crags and Arthur’s Seat, and is well known for its Rocca@Holyrood restaurant, which serves 280 g aged grass-fed rib eye (£22.50) and pan-fried lamb loin on a bed of caponata. The best desserts in the Old Town include white chocolate and toasted almond bread and butter pudding, and dark chocolate nemesis with candied fennel, There is the obligatory swimming pool and spa as well as a private Club floor. All the 156 rooms feature an array of facilities and come with toiletries from Arran Aromatics.
