This is not your usual university campus with a main building surrounded by graffiti-ridden walls and some academic blocks. The single-storeyed sprawling building that serves the Ambedkar University today is steeped in history and has been witness to all its turmoil. It's age-old trees have an impressive canopy of their own and can boast of many a historical figures taking sanctuary under their branches. Built in the 1900s, the building was initially the IG Block in British rules India. As the British were looking to develop more structures of governance, before the Parliament was built, Civil Lines, beginning from Kashmere Gate right up till Majnu Ka Tila, was going to be the scene of action.
As a result, since the time of the British and after that, this campus has housed many educational institutions including the Kashmere Gate Polytechnic, the Woodcraft Institute and the Delhi College of Engineering, the latter has now moved to Bawana.
