Ottinene is another lesser known viewpoint in coastal Karnataka, about 125 km from Mangalore town located just off NH 17 (Now renumbered as 66). Tourists cruising between Mangalore and Karwar often miss this attraction, as there’s not enough sign boards and awareness about Ottinene beach and viewpoint. Ottinene viewpoint is located at the edge of a small hill right next to Arabian Sea. River Sumana merges with the sea right below the viewpoint, offering a spectacular view. A few kilometres after crossing Byndoor town, watch out for a small signage that calls out ‘Kshitija Nisarga Dhama’―this is where you need to take a turn to enter Ottinene. Last few kilometres are not well paved, but is drivable.
A few accommodation units are available in Ottinene, inside Kshitija Nisarga Dhama, managed by forest department. One should contact forest range officer in Kundapura for booking. Alternatively nearby town of Byndoor offers decent accommodations. Closer to Ottinene viewpoint is a Someshwara temple, right next to the beach. Couple of resorts have also come up closer to the beach. From the viewpoint one can take down steps amidst giant trees to get closer view of the beach or can take a much longer route via road. Many birds can also be sighted around Ottinene. Maravanthe Beach, Murudeshwara, Kollur Mookambika temple are other nearby attractions.
