Word to the wise: Lehua Night Market is one block away; head here and then go to Lehua for dessert.

Noteworthy for: This excellent restaurant is off the tourist-radar, and locals want to keep it that way.

The only décor in this no-frills restaurant is the Chinese menu plastered on the wall, yet it doesn't need fancy fittings to attract a long queue most nights, vying for one of the eight tables. This family-run affair serves up authentic Yunnan cuisine such as dry noodles with minced pork or sliced chicken with spicy peanut sauce.

The service is so efficient – orders are taken while diners wait in line - that dishes arrive the moment guests are seated. However, the menu is in Chinese only so just point to what others are eating and the staff will mark your selections on a paper menu.
