Atlanta's grandest theater still hosts Atlanta's biggest performances
The Fabulous Fox, as it is called, was built for a Masonic group in 1929, at the end of an age of extreme opulence. Its exterior is meant to look like an intricate Moorish mosque, and the auditorium like an Arabian courtyard with a 'twinkling' sky above. Other spaces are reminiscent of old Egypt, with tiny gold sphinxes and a replica of King Tut's throne. The whole thing is gloriously painted with trompe l'oeil effects and gilded detail.
All of this grandeur has been carefully maintained, and the Fox still hosts some of Atlanta's best performances, including productions by the Atlanta Ballet, touring Broadway shows, and popular musicians. For years musicians have come to see the original, custom-made, truly special organ, 'Mighty Mo', the second-largest theater organ in the country after only that at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
