Home of the author of 'Gone with the Wind'
Talk of the town: Mitchell is said to have affectionately dubbed her home, in a three-storey Tudor Revival building, 'The Dump'.
For fans of the ultimate Southern novel, centered around the iconic belle Scarlett O'Hara and the dashing Rhett Butler, visiting author Margaret Mitchell's house museum is a must. She was a resident of apartment No. 1, where she worked on the novel from 1926 to 1935 to pass the time while recovering from a broken ankle.
Guided tours - which run regularly and cannot be scheduled ahead of time - are operated by the Atlanta History Center and last from 60 to 90 minutes. You'll see her apartment still furnished with her things, and then move on to exhibitions chronicling her life.
In another building, the museum contains movie memorabilia chronicling the making of the movie, its premiere in Atlanta, and its cultural effect on America and the world. After seeing the collections on display, find more GWTW-related articles, photographs, and memorabilia in the library at the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead.
