Greece's international hub

Noteworthy for: Fifteen million passengers travel through Athens International Airport every year.

Word to the wise: The metro is by far the easiest, quickest and most enjoyable way to reach central Athens.

The new international airport has made it easy to access central Athens with excellent transport options. The metro’s blue Line 3 deposits you at either Syntagma or Monastiraki with singles costing EUR 8 and reductions for purchasing more than one ticket. Trains run every 30 minutes (5.30am to 11pm) and take around 40 minutes.

Buses are cheaper – tickets cost EUR 5 – but can take close to an hour and a half depending on traffic. The X95 heads to Syntagma and X96 to the coast. Taxis are far more expensive - a flat rate of EUR 35 by day and EUR 50 by night - and at 30km southeast of the city, can take nearly two hours at rush hour.

The airport itself is made up of two terminals; the Main Terminal handles all inter-European flights as well as many others, and the Satellite Terminal is for non-European flights.
