Delhi’s modern art powerhouse

Noteworthy for: The gallery houses a vast collection of art from the 1850s onward.

Regally positioned in the heart of the city, right by India Gate, this gallery is nothing short of palatial - in fact, it was the former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. Popularly known as NGMA, the space, which began its incarnation as a gallery in 1954, houses approximately 14,000 pieces of art.

A substantial modern wing that was added to the existing building in 2009 highlights key modern works from well-known and world-famous Indian masters, such as M F Husain and F N Souza. Recently, the NGMA ran the first ever exhibition of Anish Kapoor (a British sculptor of Indian birth) in India.

There is a decent cafeteria and good value museum shop on-site. Note that photography is not allowed inside.
