Climb the tower for panoramic views of Istanbul

Talk of the town: Legend has it that 17th century aviator, Hezarfan Ahmet Celebi, flew from the top of the tower across to Asia.

Word to the wise: Naturally, the queues get longer around sunset, but don't be put off – they move quickly.

The 205ft medieval stone watchtower has survived fire and earthquakes to still stand as one of the city's most striking landmarks. Built in 1348, it was once part of the city’s fortifications, and now attracts droves of tourists.

Avoid the restaurant and its tacky floor show, and head straight for the viewing balcony. It can get crowded, but it’s worth it for the sight of the Golden Horn and the spreading metropolis by day or night. This may not, however, be one for sufferers of vertigo.
