Summit Hawaii's iconic crater
Noteworthy for: During winter, the summit provides a great vantage point to observe migrating humpback whales.
The most dominant feature of Oahu's South Shore, Diamond Head is a 150,000 year old, 760 foot (232 meter) high volcano crater - and the island's most popular hike. With uneven terrain and a steep climb at the end, the 1.6 mile (2.6 kilometer) slog can be rather challenging.
Start your day with breakfast at the Diamond Head Market, or if it's a Saturday, visit the Kapiolani Community College farmers' market to stock up on organic snacks. Then hike to the summit for panoramic views from the old military bunker there. Allow about two hours to complete the hike.
Save your energy and take bus 22, 23 or 24 from Waikiki's Kuhio Avenue to the crater entrance. If driving, it's easier to get a parking spot earlier in the morning before tour groups begin to arrive.
