The worldwide hub of Cuba
The fact Havana airport has Terminals 1, 2, 3 and then 5 - missing out 4 - is a telling introduction to this oft-illogical country. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, Terminal 2 is for US charter flights, Terminal 3 is the well-organized and straightforward international terminal and 5 is the hub of the Caribbean airlines.
They are spread out quite far, so check carefully which you need, and don't expect all the usual international duty free products in the departure lounge.
When arriving in the country, remember you’ll need a visa, customs form, proof of address in Havana and insurance forms, although they don’t always check these. Expect a wait for your bags, and take this into account if arranging transfers.
Public transport to and from the airport is virtually non-existent, unless you're willing to hitch. A taxi costs CUC 25 and takes 40-minutes. Don’t forget to change some money at the Cadeca in the airport; the rates are the same as elsewhere and you’ll need the cash for a taxi.
