Shanghai's most famous downtown area
Word to the wise: To get here by metro you will need to get off at East Nanjing Road, a few minutes walk up Nanjing Road, as there is no specific line that serves the Bund.
The one-mile riverfront promenade is the ultimate symbol of the city, showcasing its glorious past and its magnificent present. Dubbed “the gallery of world architecture”, the Bund is best known for its myriad of historic buildings (mostly century-old western banks and trading houses) that face the docks on the banks of the Huangpu River. Over the past two decades, the area has morphed into the most prestigious address for the finest restaurants, bars, hotels and shops.
A good way to enjoy the Bund is to walk from the north to the south along the pedestrian walkway next to the river. Head to Three on the Bund for an indulgent dinner, or just sip a cocktail on the balcony of New Heights to check out a breathtaking view of the Bund as it’s lit up like a fireworks party at night. Alternatively, take a river cruise.
