Word to the wise: The Shanghai Maglev Train zips you about halfway to the city in seven minutes, but you'll need to grab a cab or the metro from there to get downtown.
Shanghai is served by two airports, Pudong International and Hongqiao International. Pudong is the largest, whilst Hongqiao is closer to the city, and was expanded recently with a new terminal and runway.
From Pudong to downtown:
The Maglev, zipping along at 200-350km per hour, drops you off at Longyang Lu Metro. A one-way ticket is RMB 50, a round-trip ticket is RMB 80 – you get a discount of RMB 10 when you show a boarding pass from that day's flight.
Taxis take 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and cost around RMB 180 to People’s Square.
Metro Line 2 takes about 70 minutes and costs RMB 5.
There are shuttle buses to many Shanghai destinations. To find out where ask at the information desk. Fares are RMB 25-35.
From Hongqiao to downtown:
Taxis take about 25-40 minutes to People’s Square depending on traffic and cost around RMB 50.
Metro Lines 2 and 10 take about 30 minutes and cost RMB 4.
