Cross-country skiing is so fundamental to Norwegian culture that a visit to Oslo isn't really complete without trying it at least once. On winter weekends, Oslo's public transport system is crammed with hoards of bright-eyed city dwellers heading to the surrounding hills for bracing exercise and stunning views.

Be sure to stop off at one of the charming log cabins that pepper the area – some provide overnight accommodation, others simply offer hot chocolate and freshly-baked pastries.
