An imposing wall that has been guarding Lucerne ever since the 14th century, Museggmauer or the Musegg Wall is a medieval structure that is still standing in its original state. With as many as nine towers, these ramparts serve as a popular tourist attraction and do not come with an admission fee. The four towers of Schirmer, Wacht, Zyt and Männli are open to the public and the oldest clock in Lucerne is a part of the Zyt Tower. Constructed by Hans Luter in the early 16th century, this clock is an attraction in itself as it chimes a minute before all the other clocks in the city. Also, the Mannli Tower is charming as it is home to a statue of a little soldier (Mannli).

Local societies and clubs occasionally rent these towers for private events and take charge of their maintenance in return. Stretching from the Geissmatt Bridge to the eastern edge of the Old Town of Lucerne, panoramic views of the city and the glittering lake will greet you at the top of these towers. However, the summit will also be a reminder of the pain of the townsfolk when their city was under distress. A visit is therefore warranted.
