The Swiss Museum of Transport or Verkehrshaus is a treat for children and adults in equal measures. An interactive museum with vintage cars, aeroplanes, rockets, steam engines and aerial maps, Verkehrshaus documents the development of road, rail, water, air and space transport. The experience, apart from being educational, entails a lot of fun and games in the form of largest 3D cinema in the country, a fascinating planetarium and a Swiss chocolate adventure that traces the history and production of the world’s favourite dessert. There are paddle boats, dugouts and flight simulators for visitors who like to be surprised. Opened in July 1959, the museum continues to be popular among tourists despite being located in Northern Lucerne, a good half an hour from the city centre.

Apart from scientific installations and activities, the works of Hans Erni, a celebrated artist from Lucerne can be found in the premises of Verkehrshaus. There are regular exhibitions held in the museum that greatly help in establishing the connection between our past, present and the future. Home to as many as 3000 items, it has been deemed the best museum in Switzerland and rightfully so.
