With its terracotta exterior, The Midland is a powerhouse. In the early 20th century, this landmark building acted as haven for wealthy cotton merchants—who arrived from around the world to trade goods and expand their empires. Since 1903, the plush interiors have offered a distinguished degree of style to generations of guests. Kings, presidents and rockstars have all stayed here. The afternoon tea in the Octagon Lounge is ever popular. Think homemade-pastries and cakes, freshly-baked scones, replete with clotted cream and strawberry preserve. If you want more of a flourish, try champagne afternoon tea, which includes a selection of teas and a glass of champagne, and is a good option.
