Derek Freal abandoned the American Dream in 2009 to travel the world and eventually realized that Asia is the best part, which is why most of his writing covers India to Indonesia (and everywhere in between). However Derek"s specialty is in unique and offbeat travel guides -- not just for Asia but countries across the globe -- and in producing travel videos. Located just a few blocks down from of the largest toy stores in the world, Hakuhinkan Toy Park, lies Wako, Japan’s most famous department store. Although the high-end luxury items for sale here might not necessarily be the best souvenirs for budget travelers, the store is still work a visit nonetheless.

Originally founded in 1881 with the name Hattori, the Ginza location is by far Wako’s most well-known stores and is definitely an obligatory stop while shopping in Ginza. Inside, you’ll find jewelry, watches, clothing, kitchenware, furniture and other assorted household items, even food. Plus, there are several temporary exhibits here every week.

Nearby: Wako is owned by Seiko and the Seiko Museum is not far away in Sumida ward. Recommended visiting both the same day.
