As you walk along the Stradun Street, you’ll notice a bell tower standing tall in a large complex which houses the Franciscan monastery, pharmacy and a museum library, and fairly little remains of a church after it was destroyed in the earthquake of 1667. That said, the late gothic-style door with the remarkable pietà above it makes for a beautiful sight. Once you are inside, you’ll be awestruck by the lower cloister with its arches, 120 columns and 12 massive pilasters built in the Romanesque-Gothic style.

Housed in the same complex is the pharmacy that dates back all the way to 14th century and is considered to be one of the oldest European pharmacies that are still operating. The museum houses the entire inventory of the old pharmacy, paintings from old master, and rare artefacts that provide a glimpse into the rich history of Dubrovnik. If for nothing else, it’s worth going to the museum to view the painting that shows how Dubrovnik looked before the earthquake of 1667. It’s easy to spend half a day in the complex.
