This is one of those hidden places that hardly a few visit. Tucked away in a nondescript lane just before the Chaukhandi Stupa, after five minutes of walking, the gates of Padma Samye Dharma Chakra Vihar Nyingmapa Buddhist Monastery appear on your left. This is a vihara for monks and is also a centre for Buddhist studies. The sanctum of the temple houses a small statue of Buddha with colourful fresco paintings on its walls.

The most striking feature of this monastery is the bright colours on the walls and traditional paintings. The door to the main monastery is very pretty and makes for an extremely photogenic memory. It is a traditional monastery and retreat center, and is home to more than 50 monks from various countries such as Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and others. Children are provided Tibetan monastic education here and studies of the monks consist of the basics of reading, writing and the study of philosophical texts. The monks are also taught English.

The monastery is called Padma Samye Chokhor Ling and a placard inside the monastery compound indicates that the land for the monastery was purchased in 1969. Construction of the monastery began in 1990 and it was officially inaugurated in 1996 with eminent personalities of various Buddhist Sanghas present at the inauguration.
