It is one of the oldest food markets in Osaka, and a one stop shop for locals, despite being extremely touristy. Fondly referred to as ‘Osaka’s Kitchen,’ this place is close to two hundred years old and is the go-to for those who intend to buy an assortment of fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, and meat along with packaged food and condiments. Its popularity stems from the fact that everything is available at throwaway prices. For the more indulgent shoppers, over-the-top clothes, shoes, and basic electronics can also be bought. The stores are mostly tiny and humble, and are run by families and Kuromon’s history, and fare might just remind you of the Nishiki Market in Kyoto. Japanese street food can pretty much transport you into a parallel universe with its myriad flavours, and this arcade is great for sampling local staples like Oden (broth with fish cakes, boiled eggs and octopus), Takoyaki (fried octopus dumplings), Sushi, Sashimi, and pungent pickles. The vendors are all hospitable and encourage you to try as many things as you can.

Most shops at the Kuromon Market are open from 8 am till 5 pm and it is a two minute walk from the second exit of the Nipponbashi Subway Station. Visiting during the earlier hours of the day will ensure that you get the freshest batch of produce.
