Originated in early 1800's, FADO music is a traditional folk music of Portugal. It is characterized by poetic singing played with tunes of mandolin, with undertones of melancholy highlighting the dark side of love and sadness. Predominantly sung by men, the recent times have seen rise of iconic female Fadistas like Amalia Rodrigues famous for traditional FADO, and Cristina Branco known for contemporary FADO. Lisbon FADO Houses specializes in modern styles whereas in Coimbra, traditional FADO is prevalent. Do not miss visiting a FADO House where you can enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal with a classical performance. Head to Club de FADO in Alfama, one of the best FADO clubs in Lisbon, where you can enjoy mesmerising live performances accompanied with excellent Portuguese traditional cooking. The warm ambience of Club De FADO with classical tunes over Portuguese hospitality is a great way to connect with the culture of Portugal. If you are keen only on the performance, book seats at FADO In Chiado. A live performance at a charming small theatre is a great way to get introduced to this Portuguese tradition!
