Much of New Orleans’ reputation stems from the small grid-like area in the centre of town, just off the banks of the Mississippi. This was where the French set up a settlement in the 18th century, and the area was soon in the hands of the Spanish. It’s the beautiful Spanish architecture, with pillared balconies, exquisite grill work, and facades that continue to mesmerise. The French Quarter is also where jazz is known to have originated. It is really the bohemian setting, music, delicious food, art and revelry that make it one of the most visited places in New Orleans.
