The beautiful Bow River winds its way through downtown Calgary, through parks and under numerous bridges. Although you can walk, run or cycle along the river via a paved path, most of the city chooses to experience it by water. It is a rite of passage for anyone that lives here, to grab an inflatable boat or tube, kayak or canoe, or even a stand-up paddle board and make their way down the river. This family friendly activity is good for all ages and many families load onto one big raft and pack lunch, as there are many stops to be made along the way. Make sure you have at least one paddle for when the river doesn’t move as fast and you need to help your boat along. It is important to note that no alcohol is allowed on the river and police often patrol. If you are feeling really adventurous you can head out to “the wave,” a naturally created wave under the bridge that surfers from all over the city come to, and bring their surfboards. Do note, the water is often chilly in springtime, so chances are you won’t be fully immersing yourself into it.
