When the lilacs start to bloom in the city of Calgary, you know Spring is here and Summer is on its way, and what better way to kick off the summer season then with a free one-day festival. The 4th Street Lilac Festival takes place every spring, shutting down 4th avenue and turning the street into a pedestrian only festival, complete with beer vendors, live music and various activities. Live music is at the forefront of this festival with six different stages that feature over 30 local artists from Calgary. Families all take priority at the festival and its not uncommon for bouncy castles and face painters to be set up in the middle of the street. Over 500 vendors line the streets, selling everything from handmade jewellery to unique house wares, also organisations are found promoting a community cause. A parade kicks off the event every year and encourages everyone to “shake off the winter blues.” Buskers, food trucks, music and games, what more could you want from a festival that celebrates the beautiful Spring season.
