An island and its mangrove habitat (salt tolerant trees and shrubs) perhaps make for that perfect setting to spot birds. Coastal birds and crocodiles make for a curious combination to pursue in this unique forest of Goa. Other than that, flying foxes (large bats) and jackals too could feature on your safari inside. Besides the resident birds, migratory ones too catch visitor’s attention. With a fast receding bird habitat in the cities, the rich variety that this sanctuary offers is refreshing. Get ready to click storks, eagles, pintail ducks, coots, herons, drongos, sandpipers, kingfishers and many more.

Named after India's famed ornithologist, Dr. Salim Ali Wildlife Sanctuary is situated just off Panaji and accessible by a boat ride. Cooler early mornings are best to visit this site and enjoy the shared boat rides. Renting a boat to yourself may be relatively expensive but if you are a die-hard fan of watching birds at your own pace or prefer a romantic getaway, this is a perfect place to be. You could rent a bike to get here from Panaji or simply hire a cab.
