The enormous and newly-built Assumption Russian Orthodox Cathedral is simply magnificent. This all white cathedral with gold guild and sky-blue details towers over all surrounding buildings. Inside, it is nothing less than immaculate, with gold leaf murals from floor to ceiling. The altar is absolutely stunning, representing a mass of colours and a paragon of Russian Orthodox style. On the second floor, you’ll find the area where the choir usually sings, while in the basement you will see the former place of worship (used when Christianity could not be practised in the open). Most of the brothers speak little English, so there are chances that you won’t be able to take a tour around the church unless you know some Russian/Kazakh.
