With verdant green meadows, tall pine trees and a backdrop of mountains, the St Mary’s Church, in Gulmarg looks like a chapel in a quaint, small town. The church, built in early 20th century, is a fine example of Victorian architecture with grey stone walls, a tiled roof and wooden decorations. One can access the St Mary’s Church on foot while walking around the golf course or by taking a detour from the outer circle road. This short hike is sure to reward the traveler as this is one of the most peaceful places in Gulmarg. The church is open from 7 am to 5 pm everyday and there are no entry charges for visiting. The multi color lights of the Church may not be to everyone’s liking, but give it a distinct character.

In 2003, the church was renovated and a mass was held after a hiatus of 14 years. While regular mass may not happen here anymore, the church is still worth a visit as it is an integral part of Gulmarg’s culture and history. The Shiva temple and the mosque in Gulmarg are both close by and can be clubbed with the visit to the Church.
