The Alpathar lake is around 13 kms from the main Gulmarg village and lies on the other side of the Aphrawat peak. On foot it is a full day trek to get to the lake and back and is recommended only for serious trekkers and adventure lovers. The climb to Aphawat is quite steep and you will gain an elevation of roughly 6,500 ft and then descend to the other side of the peak. While coming back, you will again climb up to shoulder of Mt. Aphrawat and descend to Gulmarg. Another alternative is to ride a pony to the lake and back. It is important to be aware that pony rides can be back breaking over such distances and on these terrains. The easiest way to get to the lake is to take the Gondola up to phase 2 and trek to the lake which is about 3 kms away from the phase 2 station.
Make sure that you carry your camera with enough batteries and memory for this one!
