If you are a devotee of Maa Durga, the Kamakhya Temple is your place of solace and redemption. Even if you are not, it deserves a look in just for the sheer history and religious following it continues to draw from across the country. One of the oldest temples in the country, its original date of construction is lost in the mists of time. It was damaged by invaders during the 16th century and has since been renovated.
One of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Goddess Durga, it is believed that the temple stands on the spot where the yoni (female genitalia) of the Devi fell when Lord Shiva was dancing with the corpse of the Goddess. The temple is a magnet for Tantric worshippers and an important pilgrimage destination among the Hindus. The sanctum sanatorium of the temple lies deep inside the temple and can be reached following a flight of stairs. Another interesting anecdote about the temple is that it is a natural cave.

The atmosphere around the temple is a somber one, thanks in part to the huge trees surrounding it which cast long shadows and also the mountains in the backdrop.
