Like many cities that are closed almost year-round, Chicago is great at throwing free outdoor events. One of these is the outdoor concerts in Millennium Park, which are hosted in the Frank Gehry-designed concert hall which is named after a rather rich man that is not Frank Gehry. Every week there is something going on, from strange modernist compositions to the September Jazz fest. Check the calendar for the event nearest to you, but it’s a great place to have a picnic and see some shows. There’s also a Summer Film Series ― once a week, every Tuesday, Millennium Park puts on a crowd-pleaser. It’s always a pleasure to watch a film most people in the audience have seen before, seeing everyone shout at the screen and groan or heckle at the same moments. Even the times that the film cuts out for a second are strangely charming, as everyone groans all at once. So take some food and a blanket and enjoy the show!
