Those visiting the Giant’s Causeway from Belfast almost always combine a visit to the world-famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. A leisurely, and breathtaking stroll along the coast from the car park takes us to the edge of the mainland, from where one has to walk across on a shaky rope bridge to the tiny island of Carrickarede.

In the past the bridge was used by Salmon fisherman who would bring their haul back to the mainland. Now, it is mainly used by tourists who cross over to the little island and can enjoy spectacular views of the Rathlin Island and Scotland on a clear day. The site and its surroundings have such unique geology, flora, and fauna that it has been deemed an area of special scientific interest.

If you don’t like heights, then you might want to reconsider walking on the rope bridge. It sways a lot when it’s windy, and walking across is an adventure. However, once on the other side, you will be rewarded with some of the best views and species of birds that nature has to offer.
