Located only an hour away from Prague, Pilsen is Prague’s lesser-known little brother, but don’t let that stop you from coming by this hidden gem off the beaten track. The birthplace of Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser, this city gave “Pilsners” their moniker. It is home to massive breweries and fresh, unfiltered ales on tap, a mecca for beer fans who come here to pay homage to Czech’s national drink. For those hunting for the lost history of the Czech Republic’s Jews, it used to have a substantial Jewish population which was tragically lost during the Holocaust. For everyone else, Pilsen’s refreshingly uncrowned historical city centre and plethora of fascinating historic sites makes it a great day-trip out of Prague.
