A look at ‘sā Ladakh’, South Asia’s highest altitude art exhibition in the Himalayas

If you are wondering what ‘sā Ladakh’ is all about, then you must know that it is South Asia’s highest altitude art exhibition happening at 12000 ft above sea level. Asia’s highest-ever art exhibition debuted on August 1 in Leh, Ladakh. The prime focus was the climate, culture and community in high altitude environments.

The initiative is taken by Michael Pal, Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum and was founded by Ladakhi mountaineer Tenzing 'Jammy' Jamyang, Austrian Sri Lankan artist Raki Nikahetiya and Indian designer Sagardeep Singh.
The exhibition has installations by famous international artists as well as artists from Ladakh. Some of the prime names associated with the exhibition include Vibha Galhotra, Sharbendu De, Nikolaus Geyrhalter, Małgorzata Stankiewicz, Robert Schabus, Jigmet Angmo and Tenzing Sonam, among others.

The Ladakhi artwork is being supported by Royal Enfield. Monisha Ahmed, co-founder of Ladakh Media and Arts Organization (LAMO) said, “The inclusion of local artists is a testament to the growing recognition of contemporary art from the region on a global scale."
The festival will also have projection and video art at night. With “One Earth, One Family, One Future”, the exhibition is already a huge success in the country.

The exhibition is not only the highest, it’s also gorgeous with Disko Valley as a backdrop. The exhibition is also located close to Leh, making it easily accessible. It offers an immersive experience including site-specific installations. These are made using renewable or reusable materials.

With main aims on climate, culture, and community, sā Ladakh wishes to inspire and find creative solutions to these serious problems.
