Word to the wise: While some of the best hotels are located here, there are no nearby subte lines. Unless you’re a happy walker, you may spend a lot of time in taxis.

Noteworthy for: Recoleta is home to the notable Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, as well as the Centro Cultural Recoleta, which often hosts free exhibitions.
Recoleta has been home to the wealthiest of porteños ever since the 1870s, when, fleeing the yellow fever epidemic, they relocated here from San Telmo, building the fine mansions, grand avenues and landscaped gardens you see today. It has a definitive Parisian feel, and exudes an atmosphere of wealth. Watch ladies who lunch looking luxurious, dapper old gentleman lost in reverie at one of the belle époque cafes or bronzed sunbathers enjoying the pretty Plaza Francia, where somehow the grass is always greener.

This is where the elegantly dressed come to attire along Avenida Alvear, home to expensive boutiques and high fashion labels. The area’s most important sight is the famous cemetery - home to Evita's grave - which is definitely worth a visit.

If this all strikes you as a bit fancy, head to neighbouring Barrio Norte. Seen as more middle class, there is a lively drinking and dining scene, and Avenida Santa Fe has good shopping.
