Musée Archéologique de Nice-Cemenelum

Dig up the past at these ancient Roman ruins
Word to the wise: Although entrance to the museum and site is free, its well worth splashing out EUR 5 on the guided tour which takes place at 3.30pm every Saturday.

Inaugurated in 1989 and located in the museum-rich neighbourhood of Cimiez, the Musée Archéologique de Nice-Cemenelum houses a fine collection of artifacts covering periods from the Bronze to the Middle Ages. The open-plan museum space presents a solid collection of coinage, ceramics, sculpture and daily items, all of which were excavated nearby, either from the Cemenelum site or within the Alpes-Maritimes region.
While the well-presented museum is well worth a visit for its content alone, the remains of city of Cemenelum are the star attraction here. Some of this ancient capital of the region dates back as early as the first century, with the impressive remnants of a 400-seat amphitheatre as its crowning glory. The extensive remains of a Roman public bath and the paved streets of the city are also present on the site.
