RANAGHAT, (Nadia): A liquor factory in Bangladesh has made life miserable for residents of Ranaghat.

In clear violation of the decibel limit, the workers are using loudspeakers to co-ordinate among themselves, leaving residents and office workers distressed after a month of what they call "pure torture".

There was chaos at Panihati State General Hospital as ambulances and sundry vehicles unloaded the fire victims.

The government has encroached on a stormwater canal in Beliaghata, meant for carrying rain water and carved out plots to private individuals whose businesses had flourished by encroaching on the banks.Nearly 100 timber traders on Canal South Road, who had illegally set up godowns along the southern bank of the Beliaghata canal have not only been handed plots of 260 sqft each, but a Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor has even arranged for a contractor to construct the 30-ft-high row-house like tin buildings to facilitate the business.

A councillor who led the illegal fill-up of a canal in the heart of the city is now claiming that his action has been endorsed and approved by locals, much to the residents' dismay.
