There’s nothing wrong with GOI’s draft rules on countering deepfakes. But all AI regulation is hamstrung by US’s hands-off approach & the tech changing too fast. Govts have to act very fast just to keep pace

“As our case is new, so must we think anew, and act anew” – Abraham Lincoln’s 1862 adage is extremely relevant in AI times. It means that when confronted with novel and challenging circumstances, conventional wisdom and solutions no longer suffice.

Our post-ChatGPT human civilisation is increasingly concerned about misuse of generative AI tools to spread false info, manipulate elections, and impersonate people. Many countries are therefore enacting laws to stop the spread of deepfakes and synthetic media. India too has put forth a draft revision to IT Rules, 2021, two years after a deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna created a public storm.
