The Supreme Court says a language forged by centuries of give and take between cultures and communities can only be a unifying force and not a tool of division

Adalat, halafnama, peshi and vakalatnama — these are a few examples cited in a recent Supreme Court judgment to show how Urdu is not a language alien to India and that it has influenced daily conversations across the country for decades.

All the words mentioned above are used specifically in courts. ‘Adalat’ is court, ‘halafnama’ is an affidavit, ‘peshi’ is hearing, and ‘vakalatnama’ is a document that a person signs to appoint a lawyer to represent him.
