In late 2019, writer Aatish Taseer found himself abruptly cut off from the country he identified as home. The Indian government revoked his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, citing questions over his father’s Pakistani nationality, though many saw it as a punitive response to his outspoken journalism.
