Meenakshipuram village, Tuticorin district

Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu's most famous 'no man’s land', is reinhabited, yet many others such as Meenakshipuram, which lost its last resident in May, remain deserted

In July 2021, standing in the crumbling confines of his home, 73-year-old Kandasamy Naicker, a resident of Meenakshipuram in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district, had told TOI: “My father and grandfather lived and died here, and I too will die here.” Kandasamy died on May 24.

With his passing Meenakshipuram lost its last resident, marking the end of a once-prosperous village. “People had to walk 4km for water, so they gradually left. Only my father refused to leave,” said Bala Krishnan, Kandasamy’s son.
