Nature-worshipping tribals want to be recognised as a separate religious group. The demand has gained fresh traction during Jharkhand Assembly polls

Tribal identity is at the forefront as Jharkhand votes to elect a new government. Elections are currently being held in two phases to elect all 81 members of the assembly and counting of votes will take place on November 23.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently flagged the issue of demographic change in the state’s Santhal Pargana region. It cited the “decline” of the Adivasi population, particularly in Santhal Pargana that borders West Bengal and Bihar. Government data and independent research also show that the state’s tribal population has been shrinking since before Independence, but with out-migration playing a role in the changing composition of the population.
