With constituencies redrawn and voter equations shifting, Assam’s 2026 election will be fought on an unfamiliar political map. The changes may strengthen indigenous influence while forcing opposition parties to rethink their strategy.

In many ways, the 2026 assembly polls in Assam would mark a turning point in the state’s political trajectory, thanks to something that happened in 2023: delimitation, which has jumbled up lines of influence and marginalisation, effectively redrawing battle lines.

The first realignment of constituencies in 50 years has made everyone a little unsure of themselves, having radically transformed the political map, redrawing constituency boundaries, dismantling bastions, and re-engineering voter demographics.
