The BJP-led alliance in Maharashtra has struggled to win over Marathas. Here’s what the coalition is doing to minimise the impact of the community’s anger against it

Days before the Maharashtra assembly election dates were announced and the code of conduct that prevents the announcement of new policies kicked in, the state government announced a number of policy decisions. These included:

  • The creation of more than 40 economic welfare corporations for minority and micro-minority communities.
  • Seven members were appointed to the state’s legislative council from varied communities.
  • Salaries of madrassa teachers were doubled.

These seemingly disparate policy decisions were the result of suggestions made to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), following its assessment of the Mahayuti coalition’s poor showing in the recent Lok Sabha election.
