TDP MP Putta Mahesh Kumar, from Andhra chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's party, was charged under the NDPS Act for drug consumption but released on bail shortly after. Some of the others arrested were, however, remanded to judicial custody for 14 days

The Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh has repeatedly projected a tough stance against narcotics. That claim is now under scrutiny after a drug bust caught a sitting MP from the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP), embarrassing the government and raising questions about how the case has been handled.

TDP MP Putta Mahesh Kumar was among 11 people detained during a late-night raid at a farmhouse in Telangana’s Moinabad, near Hyderabad, on Saturday (March 14). The property belongs to Pilot Rohith Reddy, a former MLA of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), who was also among those detained.
