In India desserts are not merely sweets. Sweets signify emotions, reflect status, and hold unique connotations. The sweet that has acquired a layered connotation, particularly in politics, is revdi. Considered a humble, low-end item, revdi is a hard small flat candy made of a mixture of sesame seeds, ghee and jaggery.
